The origin of Da Wu Ye lies in Shangjiao Village, Fenghuang Town. In 1958, the village's old production team introduced a batch of seedling saplings from Li Zai Ping in Wudong for cultivation. During careful nurturing by Lin Miansheng and others, they noticed that one particular tea tree had leaves that were significantly darker green and larger than the others, standing out in remarkable contrast. Recognizing the potential of this tea tree as a superior variety, they decided to harvest and process it separately, giving rise to what later became known as "Da Wu Ye." The name "Da Wu Ye" comes from the deep green color of its leaves (locally referred to as "Wu") and the larger leaf size, characteristics that define its unique appearance.
Da Wu Ye is a high-aroma type of dancong, known for its natural and sweet pomelo flower fragrance. The leaves of this batch of high mountain lao cong Da Wu Ye are finer and more tightly curled. After brewing, the liquor has a pale yellow, bright greenish hue in the cup. The fragrance is delightful, with a pomelo flower aroma combined with a fresh, sweet peach-like scent that is vibrant and high-spirited, reminiscent of the natural air of mountain herbs and stones, giving a refreshing, invigorating sensation. As you sniff the lid fragrance, it is initially creamy to the nose, followed by a rich, lingering orchid aroma that is deep and floral. On the palate, the tea is smooth and light, yet crisp and mellow, like a gentle breeze that opens up the throat, as refreshing as autumn clouds floating high above. This tea is full-bodied, rounded, with a medium level of sweetness. The aftertaste lingers on the cheeks, with a sweet, enduring flavor that continues to pleasantly unfold.
This is a tea to enjoy after a meal, and for those with a sweet tooth, this lao cong Da Wu Ye pairs very well with turrón de almendra or mazapán.
